Description
Spring 2018
This course puts forward the hypothesis that writing and rhetoric shape what counts as science, how it is practiced, and who pays attention to it. We will test this hypothesis through the lens of rhetorical genre studies, examining topics ranging from the invention of the lightbulb to the ongoing public debate over climate change. Students will have the opportunity to further explore the connections between rhetoric, writing, scientific inquiry, and civic engagement in their own chosen areas of interest or fields of study. |
Catalog
This course moves beyond the introduction to scholarly communications offered in Critical Writing for the Sciences (WTNG 210). In the course, students analyze and produce professional communications in the sciences. Students are expected to initiate new research projects for this course and practice careful revision and editing of their work. Students condense substantial research for a grant proposal, configure texts, present work orally in a public venue, and compile a professional portfolio. |
