Course and University Policies (and Related Resources)
This section includes my own policy language (no italics), complemented by required language for syllabi (italics) and links to further information.
Accessibility
I am committed to ensuring that everyone in this course has an equal opportunity to learn. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me regarding any issues that may affect your learning. I am more than happy to work with you, and to help you identify further resources available to you on campus. (See "Equity" below) |
Students who wish to receive academic accommodations for this course must first register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS). The most commonly requested accommodations are extended time for testing and use of the SAS Testing Center. SAS will provide registered students with an Academic Accommodations Authorization form to share with each instructor. SAS is located on the 1st floor of the Main University Library and is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. |
Academic Integrity
Most instances of plagiarism involve honest misunderstandings regarding citation conventions. Learning these conventions is like learning the rules of etiquette of a culture previously foreign to you. I generally treat such breaches of decorum as teaching moments. If you find yourself in need of such a teaching moment, my advice to you is to be humble about it. Humility and integrity are both cornerstones of learning about new cultures, including the intellectual tradition around which RWU was built. Should you find yourself disinclined to embrace that tradition’s values and practices regarding academic integrity, the university’s policy offers further options beyond the teaching moment. |
Attendance and Timeliness
You can miss up to two class meetings for any reason whatsoever. Additional absences incur grade penalties as stipulated by the Grading Contract. Not all assignments completed during missed class meetings can be made up at a later date. It is your responsibility to inform me of upcoming absences and to make the extra effort to keep up with coursework. Every three tardies will be counted as one absence. Late work should always be submitted, but it will only be considered for credit at the end of the semester, in light of your overall performance in the course and any additionally stipulated terms. Opportunities to make up for absences, missed/late assignments, or low grades may be provided at the professor's discretion. |
Equity
I am committed to creating an equitable environment in which you not only feel safe from violence of all kinds, but valued for being who you are and empowered to learn, and I expect you to help me create that same environment for your fellow students. We create such an environment together by valuing difference even as we exercise integrity in our pursuit of knowledge, which means challenging views that potentially pose harm to others. I also strive for equity in my grading practices by using a Grading Contract aimed at removing subjective and discriminatory measures of competence, and putting in place an alternative scale by which you (the student) choose the appropriate workload to match your learning (and grade-related) goals in this course. |
Roger Williams University fosters a campus free of power-based personal violence including sexual harassment, domestic violence, relationship violence, stalking, and/or any form of sex or gender-based discrimination. If you disclose a personal experience as described above, either verbally or in writing, the course instructor is required to notify the Title IX Coordinator. To disclose any such violence confidentially, contact one of the three resources listed below:

Honors Credits
This course will include a number of options for fulfilling Honors requirements above and beyond the Public Sphere Learning Domain Outcomes. If this is something you're after, let's talk sooner than later to ensure you're covering your bases. |
If you are taking this WTNG class to satisfy a requirement for credit hours in the Honors Program, I am happy to work with you to ensure you meet the Public Sphere Learning Domain Outcomes. To meet the Civic Communication and Civic Analysis of Knowledge criteria, you will need to actively and substantively participate in the public presentation component of the course at the end of the semester. Please schedule a meeting with me (for no later than the third week of the semester) to discuss this option or alternatives for fulfilling the Honors requirements. |
Technology
We will often use technology as part of the learning and writing process in this class. If you don't have access to a device on which you can write and access the internet, consider checking out a laptop from Information Technology. Use your device when it is relevant to the task at hand. Do not when it is not. Inappropriate technology use disrupts learning, contributing to educational inequities, violating course policy, and constituting a breach of academic integrity. |
